One of the English verb inflections is used to make the verb agrees with the subject. The subject-verb agreement is very easy to be learned since there is just one change most verbs suffer to agree with certain subjects:
  • If the subject is a singular noun or a third person singular pronoun, –s or –es is added at the end of the simple present verb.

Examples:

 Una de las flexiones de un verbo en inglés es usada para hacer que el verbo concuerde con el sujeto. El acuerdo sujeto-verbo es muy fácil de entender puesto que solo hay un solo cambio que la mayoría de los verbos experimentan para concordar con ciertos sujetos.
  • Si el sujeto es un sustantivo singular o un pronombre de tercera persona singular, -s o –es es agregado al final del verbo en tiempo presente simple.

Ejemplos:


  1. The dog barks. (El perro ladra.)
  2. My mom cooks. She enjoys doing it. (Mi mamá cocina. Ella disfruta hacerlo)
  3. The kid plays. He enjoys his Christmas gift. (El niño juega. Él disfruta su regalo de navidad.)
  4. My sister washes the dishes. (Mi hermana lava los trastos.)
  5. The baby cries. (El bebé llora)


Note that in the three first examples, just a –s is added to the verb. On the other hand, in the forth example, -es is added to the verb, and in the last example, the y in cry is replaced by i and then –es is added to form cries. In general, the following rules apply:
  • If the verb ends in -sh, -ch, -s, -z and –x, then -es is added.
  • If the verb ends in an -y preceded by a consonant, the y is replaced by i and then –es is added.
 Nótese que en los primeros tres ejemplos simplemente una –s es agregada al verbo. Por otro lado, en el cuarto ejemplo, -es es agregado al verbo, y en el último ejemplo, la y en cry es sustituida por i y después –es es agregado para formar cries. En general, las reglas siguientes se aplican:
  • Si el verbo termina en –sh, -ch, -s, -z o –x, entonces –es es agregado al final del verbo.
  • Si el verbo termina en una y precedida por una consonante, entonces y es reemplazada por i y luego se añade –es al final.
